Training

We welcome everyone to our open sessions, regardless of skill or experience. Hockey is a tough sport to learn and a basic level of skating ability is recommended, but not necessary!

At these sessions you will be taught the various different skills required in hockey; stick handling, passing, tactics – to name but a few. While we do take hockey seriously, these sessions are all about having fun. A typical session will start with a 5 minute warmup to allow everyone to get ready, followed by around 10 minutes of general skating drills to get everyone warmed up. The next 40 minutes are a mixture of drills designed to build up you hockey skills, and finally we finish with a 4-a-side scrimmage for the remainder.

Ice hockey sessions are held at Gosport Ice Rink. We generally meet around an hour and a half before the session starts outside the Southampton University Student’s Union. This allows time for everyone to assemble and then head down to the ice rink, as well as time for getting changed once there. Ice skate hire is free, however we require all players to pay £5 towards the cost of hiring the rink

The club maintains a stock of kit that new players can borrow until they have bought their own. More information on kit and buying your own can be found on our kit page.
